How to Choose an Adult Only Cruise

“Adult only cruise” covers four very different things, and the kind of holiday you end up on depends entirely on which of them you book. A fully adult-only ship is a different proposition to an adult-only zone on a family-friendly liner, and Virgin Voyages is a different proposition to Oceania even though both are now adult-only operators.

This guide walks through how to think about that choice. If you want to see what’s actually available, our adult only cruises page lists every sailing we hold across the major operators including Virgin Voyages, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises and Ambassador Cruise Line.

30-second view: which type of adult-only cruise suits you?

The right answer isn’t always the most adult-only option. Some guests are happier on a family ship with a guaranteed adult-only zone than on a fully adult-only ship that doesn’t match their travelling style.

What “adult only” actually means

The phrase covers four distinct types of cruising and the difference matters.

Fully adult-only cruise lines. Every ship in the fleet is exclusively for adults, with a minimum age (usually 18+) applied across the board. Virgin Voyages was the first major modern line to operate this way. Oceania Cruises became fully adult-only from January 2026.

Adult-only ships within a mainstream fleet. Most lines run family-friendly ships but operate one or two adults-only vessels alongside them. P&O Cruises is the standout example, with Arcadia and Aurora both adults-only while the rest of the P&O fleet welcomes families.

Adult-focused traditional lines. Lines that don’t formally restrict children but cater so closely to mature, no-fly British travellers that the onboard experience is, in practice, almost entirely adult. Fred Olsen and Ambassador Cruise Line are the two main UK examples.

Adult-only zones on family-friendly ships. Self-contained areas on otherwise family-friendly ships, with their own pools, bars and loungers and a strict minimum age. The largest mainstream lines all run these.

If you choose the wrong one, the holiday won’t feel “adult-only” the way you imagined it. Most disappointment comes from booking a family-friendly ship with an adult-only zone, expecting the whole ship to feel adult.

Fully adult-only cruise lines

Virgin Voyages is the modern, lively choice. Adults-only by design across all four ships, with more than 20 eateries on each, a strong nightlife and entertainment offer, and a younger demographic skewing 30s and 40s. The atmosphere is closer to a boutique hotel at sea than a traditional cruise. Suits couples, friends groups and solo travellers who want social energy. Less suited to guests who want a quiet, traditional cruise.

Oceania Cruises is the refined, destination-led choice. Small-ship luxury (around 700 to 1,250 guests per ship), inclusive fares, exceptional cuisine and a heavier itinerary focus. Adults-only across the entire fleet since January 2026. Suits couples who want the slower pace, longer itineraries and quieter onboard atmosphere.

The two lines are at opposite ends of the adult-only spectrum on tone and pace. Virgin is lively, Oceania is refined. The price point for both is comparable at the higher cabin grades, but Virgin’s headline fares are typically lower.

Adult-only ships and adult-focused traditional lines

P&O Cruises Arcadia is a mid-sized adults-only ship in the P&O fleet, popular for longer itineraries (world cruises, longer Mediterraneans) and a traditional cruising rhythm. Calmer atmosphere than the rest of the P&O fleet.

P&O Cruises Aurora is the smaller of P&O’s two adults-only ships, with a similar traditional feel and an attentive service style. Strong choice for repeat P&O guests who want to step away from the family-friendly Iona-class experience.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines runs four smaller ships (around 800 to 1,400 guests each) focused on scenic cruising, enrichment programmes and a British clientele. Not formally adults-only but family bookings are rare. Suits guests who want a quieter, smaller-ship experience without paying ultra-luxury rates.

Ambassador Cruise Line is the no-fly value-led option, sailing primarily for over-50s guests from UK ports including Tilbury and Liverpool. Traditional cruising at accessible prices.

“The question I ask first is always how late you want to be up. Virgin Voyages and Oceania both technically tick the adult-only box, but they’re worlds apart on tone, and the wrong choice between them is the most expensive mistake I see clients make. For couples who want energy and late nights, Virgin every time. For couples who want a quiet drink on a balcony at 9pm and an early breakfast, Oceania. If you’re not sure, I’ll usually point first-time adult-only cruisers at P&O Arcadia or Aurora as the middle ground.”

Adult-only zones on family-friendly ships

You don’t have to book a fully adult-only ship to escape the children’s pool. The four large mainstream lines all run dedicated adult-only zones on their family-friendly vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Line runs Vibe Beach Club (an extra-charge top-deck adult zone) and Spice H2O (free, aft pool deck) on most ships. Vibe is the more exclusive of the two, with limited day passes and private bar service.

Princess Cruises runs The Sanctuary, a calm adult-only retreat with plush loungers, dedicated service and a spa-like atmosphere. Available on most Princess ships, day-pass or week-pass models.

Royal Caribbean runs The Solarium, a glass-enclosed adults-only zone with pools, whirlpools and ocean views. Included in fare, no extra charge.

Disney Cruise Line runs Quiet Cove Pool and adult-only restaurants and lounges. Worth knowing about if you’re cruising Disney for other reasons (a family trip with an extended family member who wants adult-only space).

The Royal Caribbean Solarium is the most accessible (no extra charge). NCL’s Vibe is the most exclusive. Princess’s Sanctuary sits in between.

Adult-only beach areas on private islands

A newer trend: cruise lines are building adult-only zones on their private-island stops too.

Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay features Hideaway Beach, an adults-only enclave with private beach, infinity pool and dedicated bar service. Extra charge, capacity-limited.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay has upgraded adults-only zones with cabana rentals, dedicated dining and quieter beach areas.

MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay has adult-focused zones within an otherwise family island, with quieter beaches and bar service.

These aren’t a reason to book a cruise on their own, but they upgrade the typical “private island day” experience materially if you’re already on the ship.

Lively or refined: which style suits you

The single biggest mistake we see is booking the wrong style of adult-only cruise. Virgin Voyages is exceptional if you want energy, late nights, modern cuisine and a social atmosphere. It is the wrong choice if you want a quiet, traditional cruise.

Oceania, Fred Olsen and Ambassador are the opposite proposition: quieter, slower, more cultural, more enrichment-led. They are not where you go for a party.

P&O Arcadia and Aurora sit between the two: traditional British cruising with the calm of adult-only company, but a more conservative pace.

If you’ve never cruised adult-only before, our specialists will usually ask one question first: how late do you want to be up. The answer narrows the shortlist quickly.

When to sail and how to book

Adult-only cruises operate year-round, but each line has its preferred seasons.

Virgin Voyages: year-round Caribbean and Mediterranean rotations.

Oceania: year-round, with strong shoulder-season itineraries (May, September, October).

P&O Arcadia and Aurora: world cruises January to April, then European and Mediterranean through to October.

Fred Olsen and Ambassador: UK no-fly season-led, strongest April to October.

Most adult-only cruises are booked nine to fifteen months ahead. Virgin Voyages and Oceania world-cruise voyages are the longest waiting lists. Last-minute pricing exists on Virgin in particular, where the demographic is more flexible than the traditional cruise market.

Talking to a specialist before you book

Choosing the right adult-only cruise is a style decision more than a price decision. Our specialists book adult-only departures every week and can compare lines on tone, pace, inclusion and onboard experience.

The questions worth bringing to that conversation: how social do you want it, how late do you want to be up, are you cruising as a couple or with friends, do you want fully adult-only or are you content with an adult zone on a family ship, and what’s your budget per night.

FAQs

Are fully adult-only cruise lines actually child-free?

Yes. Virgin Voyages and Oceania set a strict 18+ minimum age across every ship and every sailing. Bookings cannot include under-18s.

Do P&O Arcadia and Aurora ever take families?

No. Both ships are operated as adults-only and apply an 18+ minimum age throughout the year.

Is Virgin Voyages a party cruise?

It’s lively, especially on shorter Caribbean sailings, but it isn’t only a party cruise. Plenty of guests use it as a stylish modern alternative to a traditional cruise. The atmosphere shifts depending on the itinerary and the time of year.

What’s the age range on adult-only cruises?

It varies widely. Virgin Voyages skews 30s and 40s. Oceania, Fred Olsen and Ambassador skew 60s and 70s. P&O Arcadia and Aurora skew 55+. Worth asking your specialist what to expect on a specific sailing.

Do adult-only ships have single-supplement waivers?

Sometimes. Virgin Voyages has dedicated solo cabins on Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady. Oceania, Fred Olsen and Ambassador all offer occasional reduced or waived solo supplements, especially on repositioning voyages. Worth asking specifically rather than assuming.

Are adult-only zones worth the extra charge?

For NCL’s Vibe, usually yes if you want the most exclusive on-ship escape and don’t mind the daily cost. For Princess’s Sanctuary, it depends on how much time you’ll actually spend there. For Royal Caribbean’s Solarium, there’s no extra charge so it’s a clear win.
