The Original Coastal Voyage
Hurtigruten has been sailing Norway’s Coastal Express since 1893, following a route that continues to connect communities along one of the world’s most remarkable coastlines. The complete round voyage travels from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, crossing the Arctic Circle and calling at 34 ports as fjords, islands, fishing villages and Arctic landscapes unfold around the ship. What makes it different from a conventional Norwegian fjords cruise is the rhythm of the journey. Some ports offer hours to explore while others are short working calls, with local passengers joining and leaving and cargo continuing its journey along the coast. You are not simply visiting Norway, you are travelling through part of its everyday life.
Norway’s Coastal Kitchen
Food on Hurtigruten is closely connected to the landscape outside. Through Norway’s Coastal Kitchen, ingredients are sourced from around 70 farms, fisheries, bakeries and producers, allowing menus to draw on the flavours and traditions of the regions through which you sail. That could mean Arctic char or king crab in northern waters, cheeses and baked goods from coastal producers or dishes inspired by ingredients arriving onboard along the route. Rather than simply eating while you travel, dining becomes another way to follow the Norwegian coast from one region to the next.
What’s Included
On an Original Coastal Express voyage, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included alongside unlimited tea and filter coffee, with complimentary Wi-Fi available onboard. Signature voyages take the experience further, adding an all-inclusive drinks package, afternoon snacks, enhanced onboard activities and gratuities. That distinction is worth understanding before you book. Original gives you the classic working coastal experience with full-board dining, while Signature is designed around a more inclusive, leisurely journey. Shore excursions remain optional on both, allowing you to choose how deeply you want to explore each destination.
Four Seasons
There is no single best time to sail the Norwegian coast because every season changes the journey. Winter surrounds the ship with snow-covered mountains, long Arctic nights and opportunities to see the Northern Lights, while spring brings lengthening days, waterfalls and landscapes beginning to awaken. Summer takes you north beneath the Midnight Sun, when daylight can continue around the clock above the Arctic Circle. Autumn brings deeper colours, darker evenings and a quieter atmosphere to the coast, with the Original Coastal Express continuing to sail throughout the year.
Original or Signature
Choose an Original voyage and you travel as part of the historic Coastal Express, calling frequently at communities between Bergen and Kirkenes and experiencing the working rhythm of Norway’s coast. It is informal, authentic and wonderfully connected to the places through which you sail. Choose Signature and the pace changes. The Svalbard Line and North Cape Line spend several hours in selected ports, with all-inclusive food and selected drinks, three dining experiences and an expanded programme from the Expedition Team. It is still unmistakably Hurtigruten, but with more time ashore and a more inclusive experience onboard.

Northern Lights Cruises
Travel on a qualifying Hurtigruten voyage of 11 days or more between 20 September and 31 March and your journey can be covered by the Northern Lights Promise. Hurtigruten’s ships travel deep into the Arctic Circle, with Aurora alerts available in cabins and suites so you can relax onboard until the crew announces that the lights have appeared.
If no Northern Lights occurrence is recorded within sight of the ship during a qualifying voyage, Hurtigruten offers a complimentary 6-day southbound or 7-day northbound Original Coastal Express voyage during the following Aurora season, subject to its booking and redemption conditions.
