The Original Coastal Express
The Original Coastal Express is the journey that began the Hurtigruten story in 1893. The complete 12-day round voyage travels from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, covering around 2,500 nautical miles and calling at 34 ports as it connects communities along the Norwegian coast.
Its appeal lies in the rhythm. Local passengers join for shorter journeys, cargo and supplies are loaded and unloaded, and some port calls last only long enough for the ship to perform its working role. Others give you several hours to step ashore and explore. You are not simply cruising past Norway, you become part of the route that helps connect it.

Signature Voyages
Signature Voyages take Hurtigruten’s coastal knowledge and gives you more time to immerse yourself in selected destinations. Rather than calling at numerous ports each day, these itineraries typically visit one or two, often staying for several hours so there is time to explore independently or join a longer shore excursion.
The experience onboard is elevated too. Food and selected drinks are all-inclusive, the Expedition Team is larger and the activity programme is enhanced, while MS Trollfjord and MS Midnatsol provide an intimate base for journeys ranging from the winter landscapes of The North Cape Line to Svalbard beneath the Midnight Sun.
Which Voyage Gives You More Time Ashore?
If you want to experience the greatest number of Norwegian coastal communities, Original has the advantage. The complete Coastal Express calls at 34 ports, with stops ranging from around ten minutes to several hours. That variety is fundamental to the experience, taking you from well-known destinations to small harbours most conventional cruises simply pass by.
Signature visits fewer places but gives you considerably longer in many of them. The Svalbard Line currently averages around five hours in each port, while The North Cape Line averages around six. Other Signature itineraries can spend even longer ashore. It is less about collecting ports and more about having time to settle into each one.

Dining: Full Board or All-Inclusive?
Both styles place Norway’s Coastal Kitchen at the heart of the experience, with local ingredients and regional flavours connecting meals to the landscape outside. On Original voyages, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included and primarily served in Torget, while additional restaurants such as Kysten, Brygga and Multe provide further options at an extra cost or through applicable packages.
Signature is all-inclusive. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available in Flora, with lunch and dinner also included at Brasserie Árran. Selected wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks are included in the restaurants and 1893 Bar during opening hours, while suite guests also receive dining in fine-dining restaurant Røst.
Drinks and What’s Included
The Original Coastal Express is not an all-inclusive cruise. Full-board dining forms the core of the fare, while exact additional benefits depend on whether you choose Hurtigruten’s Basic or Select fare. Select adds benefits including complimentary tea, filter coffee and Wi-Fi, while most other drinks, shore excursions, flights and transfers cost extra.
Signature makes budgeting simpler by including meals, an afternoon snack, a generous selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, expert-led onboard activities and gratuities. Shore excursions, flights and transfers remain additional, so you still have the freedom to decide how much you want to add ashore.
Onboard Life and the Expedition Team
Neither Original nor Signature is built around casinos, large theatres or traditional cruise entertainment. Instead, the focus remains firmly on the destination, with Expedition Teams sharing stories, talks and insight into Norway’s nature, culture, history and communities.
On Signature, that programme goes deeper. Hurtigruten has expanded the Expedition Team for these voyages, with more hands-on guiding, lectures, tastings and included activities. You might learn how to photograph the Northern Lights, discover the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv or head onto deck for a tasting inspired by the region through which you are sailing.
Which Is Better for the Northern Lights?
Both can be excellent choices during the darker months. The 12-day Original Coastal Express travels deep into northern Norway, crossing the Arctic Circle and spending night after night beneath the Auroral Zone. Its constant movement and frequent coastal calls create a wonderfully varied winter journey, while qualifying longer departures can be covered by Hurtigruten’s Northern Lights Promise.
For a slower alternative, The North Cape Line combines the Northern Lights season with the Signature experience. The 15-day round voyage from Oslo towards the North Cape is all-inclusive and spends longer in selected destinations, making it particularly appealing if you want winter scenery, Aurora opportunities and more leisurely days ashore.
Which Is Better for Summer?
Original sails the Norwegian coast throughout the year, so summer brings long days, green mountains, waterfalls and the Midnight Sun above the Arctic Circle. The working nature of the route remains unchanged, giving you the chance to see dozens of coastal communities during Norway’s brightest season.
Signature opens another possibility: Svalbard. The Svalbard Line sails north from Bergen, crosses the Barents Sea and reaches Longyearbyen and remote Ny-Ålesund, combining the Norwegian coast with the High Arctic under the Midnight Sun. It is a more ambitious choice for travellers who want their Norway voyage to continue beyond the mainland.
The Ships: Original or Signature?
Original Coastal Express voyages are operated by Hurtigruten’s classic coastal fleet, with ships including MS Kong Harald, MS Nordkapp, MS Nordlys, MS Nordnorge, MS Polarlys, MS Richard With and the smaller, more traditional MS Vesterålen. Facilities vary, but the ships share an informal atmosphere and are designed to keep the passing Norwegian coast close.
Signature voyages are centred around MS Trollfjord and MS Midnatsol, Hurtigruten’s two premium Signature ships. Both provide panoramic spaces, multiple dining venues and comfortable surroundings designed for the slower pace and more inclusive style of these itineraries.
