The smallest capital in the European Union, Valletta, has many names, including “The Fortress City” and “A city built by gentlemen for gentlemen”. Culturally diverse, architecturally stunning, and historically rich, Malta’s main city ranks high on any cruise destination list.

During their time here, visitors take a look at the city’s impressive forts, cathedrals, and bastions. The timeless atmosphere of this city and the grid-like narrow streets lined with some of Europe’s most delicate artwork and palaces bring a romantic air to the holiday experience.

What’s more, the city offers magnificent cruise experiences out of its homeport, Valletta Cruise Port. Read on to find out what a cruise from Valletta has to offer.

When is the best time to cruise from Valletta?

The best time to visit Valetta is in the late spring or early summer months — April, May, and June when the weather is warm, and tourism is low. Cruising from the city is also popular between June and October when the sea temperature averages 23°C.

Valletta’s Mediterranean climate allows for a balmy holiday all year round, with hot and dry summers and pleasant winters. July brings the warmest days of the year, with the average daily temperature reaching as high as 32°C and as low as 23°C. If you want to sunbathe at the beach, it’s best to visit the city between June and September. In January, you can expect average temperatures between 9°C and 15°C, perfect for a cooler holiday with plenty of sun.

Which cruise lines sail from Valletta?

Discover the city’s beauty and wake up to new horizons on some of the finest cruise ships. Many cruise lines, such as MSC Cruises and P&O Cruises, offer regular journeys from Valetta. Cruise operators like Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, and Seabourn also sail from Valetta a few times per year and are perfect choices if you want to immerse yourself in a luxury seafaring experience. These select few cruise lines offer holidays worth every penny, whether you plan to travel alone, with family, or with your partner.

Where do cruises from Valletta go to?

The cruises often leave Valletta to explore exciting destinations like Europe, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, and the Aegean Sea.

A voyage sailing from Valetta might take you to Crotone, where you can visit the Temple of Hera Lacinia in the nearby Archaeological Park. Another popular stop is Messina, on the Italian island of Sicily, where an excursion to one of Europe’s tallest active volcanoes, Mount Etna, is a must.

Before reaching Venice, some ships stop at Ancona, known for its fine beaches and world-class hotels. In addition to smaller historical towns, cruise itineraries from Valetta go to famous Mediterranean locations like Calica, Barcelona, Palamos, Sete, Portofino, Florence, Rome, and Elbra.

You might be lucky enough to dock in Istanbul if your cruise ventures East. Here you will see the Hagia Sophia, a 6th-century dome church, and the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque), a mosque with unique, exquisite interiors. Some cruises will take you as far as Bodrum, Cyprus, and even Jerusalem.

What should you do whilst you’re in Valletta?

Apart from quaint cobbled streets, Valletta has a fascinating history. Head to the Malta Experience Museum to learn about Malta’s early roots as a trading centre in the resistance movement during World War II. You can also visit the National Museum of Archaeology to see prehistoric artefacts and Neolithic pottery.

After getting a taste of history, you can head to one of Europe’s oldest operational theatres, the Manoel Theater. This major performing arts centre in Valletta has an oval auditorium, a pastel blue ceiling, and three tiers of gold-leaf-decorated wooden boxes. Despite several renovations, it has retained many of its architectural features.

Next, make your way to Republic Street in Valletta to get souvenirs and snacks. Tourists gather here to enjoy the many excellent restaurants, pubs, souvenir shops, general stores, etc. So whether you’re in the mood for food, drinks, or some shopping, this is the place to be! You will also find street entertainers and vendors selling unique handcrafted goods.

If Republic Street’s food does not satisfy you, head to Valletta’s food market to try foods from various international cuisines like Indian, Chinese, BBQ, American, Mexican, and many more. Be warned — you will have a hard time finding a vegetarian eatery.

After a good meal, check out the Modern Valletta Waterfront and marvel at the docked ships.

There is no better time to visit Valletta than in February, when you can partake in incredible parades, performances, and float processions. Valletta is an all-year-round destination, but you will find smaller crowds if you plan your trip during winter and spring.

Extend Your Stay?

Valletta is an excellent location for a city break, and you’ll need at least two nights to see all the attractions and genuinely enjoy the nightlife. However, we suggest staying at least three nights or more to get a taste of the local culture.

Consider extending your stay in Malta to a week, as this will allow you to explore the sister islands of Comino and Gozo, which are legendary destinations. Proceed to Gozo and delight yourself in the crystal clear water of the Blue Lagoon.

Comino island also offers some great swimming and snorkelling opportunities. Santa Maria Bay is a must-visit spot for those wishing to marvel at the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
