MSC Cruises has announced a brand new private island destination in The Bahamas called Sandy Cay, set to open in 2028.

The new development will sit alongside Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and marks a major step in MSC’s Caribbean expansion. Early details suggest the island will focus on a quieter, more nature-led experience. As a result, it will offer something different from traditional private cruise islands.

At the same time, cruise lines continue to invest heavily in private destinations. However, MSC is taking a different approach by creating two distinct island experiences side by side.

What is Sandy Cay

Sandy Cay is a new private island located next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in The Bahamas.

While Ocean Cay focuses on beach clubs, entertainment and a lively atmosphere, the new island is being developed as a more refined extension. In contrast, it is designed to feel calmer, more private and more connected to the natural surroundings.

Sandy Cay vs Ocean Cay: key differences

This is where the concept becomes more interesting.

Instead of repeating the same model, MSC is dividing the experience into two distinct styles.

FeatureSandy CayOcean Cay
AtmosphereQuiet and exclusiveLively and social
FocusRelaxation and natureActivities and entertainment
ExperienceMore secludedMore energetic
Ideal forCouples and luxury travellersFamilies and groups

Because of this, guests will be able to move between both islands depending on how they want their day to feel.

What we know so far

So far, MSC has shared limited details. However, the direction is already clear.

The island will focus on a simpler and more natural experience. It will offer more space, fewer crowds and a slower pace throughout the day. Therefore, it will appeal to travellers who want to step away from busy environments.

It will also feature aragonite sand, known for its bright white colour and soft texture. In addition, the design will focus on preserving the surrounding marine environment.

This builds on the work already done at Ocean Cay, which MSC transformed from an industrial site into a marine reserve.

For more details on MSC’s existing island, you can explore the official Ocean Cay page.

Who can visit the island

Access will be exclusive.

Only guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys will be able to visit. This helps control the number of visitors and maintain a quieter atmosphere.

Explora Journeys, MSC’s luxury brand, will naturally align with this more refined experience. However, MSC Cruises guests will also benefit from the added flexibility.

Why this matters for Caribbean cruises

Private islands now play a major role in Caribbean cruises.

Most cruise lines focus on large attractions and high-energy experiences. However, this new destination takes a different approach.

Instead of adding more features, MSC is focusing on balance. Guests will be able to choose between a more social experience on Ocean Cay or a quieter escape nearby.

Because of this, the overall cruise experience becomes more flexible.

What this means for MSC Cruises

This is more than just a new destination.

It shows how MSC is evolving its Caribbean offering. By combining two different island experiences, MSC can appeal to a wider range of travellers within the same sailing.

This approach sets it apart from competitors who focus on a single private island concept.

When will Sandy Cay open

The island is expected to open in 2028.

More details will likely be released closer to launch. As interest grows, itineraries including this destination are expected to become more popular.

Planning your cruise
