10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites You Can Visit by Cruise

Some of the world’s most striking UNESCO World Heritage Sites are best reached by cruise. The water gives you a view of the site you can’t get any other way, and the ship is the easiest way to reach a stretch of geographically scattered sites in a single trip. This guide lists ten standout UNESCO sites you can visit by cruise from the UK, the cruise lines that call there, and what makes each one worth the day.

Last updated: 27 May 2026.

Why see UNESCO sites by cruise

Three reasons cruise is the best way to see UNESCO sites: you arrive at the site without the long internal-transfer flights or trains, the ship is your hotel so you don’t pack-and-repack, and many of the most visually striking sites (Halong Bay, the Norwegian Fjords, the Dalmatian Coast) are best seen from the water itself rather than the shore.

1. Halong Bay, Vietnam

Roughly 1,600 limestone islands rising out of the Gulf of Tonkin. UNESCO listed since 1994. Most cruise itineraries calling here are Asia-Pacific or repositioning sailings on Princess, Holland America, Silversea, Regent or Oceania. Worth a 1-2 night pre or post stay in Hanoi.

2. Dubrovnik Old City, Croatia

A walled medieval old town on the Dalmatian Coast. UNESCO listed since 1979. Standard call on Eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic sailings. Climb the city walls early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

3. Venice and its Lagoon, Italy

Cruise ship access to Venice itself is now restricted to smaller vessels (large cruise ships dock at Trieste or Ravenna and bus passengers in). Venice remains one of the most visited UNESCO sites for cruise passengers despite the access change. Most sailings on Cunard, Silversea, Viking Ocean and Oceania still include it.

4. Acropolis of Athens, Greece

Greek classical-era hilltop citadel including the Parthenon. UNESCO listed since 1987. Standard Eastern Mediterranean cruise port — most ships dock at Piraeus, a 30-minute taxi from the Acropolis. Closed Tuesdays in some seasons; check before booking shore excursions.

5. Petra, Jordan

The rose-red rock-carved Nabataean city. UNESCO listed since 1985. Reached from Aqaba port on Red Sea cruises. The site is a 2-hour drive each way from the port, so a full-day shore excursion is the norm. Worth the long day.

6. West Norwegian Fjords (Geirangerfjord and Naeroyfjord)

UNESCO listed since 2005. The fjords are the cruise — there is no shore excursion that gives a better view than the deck. Reached on Norwegian Fjords sailings out of Southampton on P&O, Princess, Cunard, Fred Olsen, Ambassador and HX Expeditions.

7. Pompeii and Herculaneum, Italy

The Roman cities frozen by the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. UNESCO listed since 1997. Standard call from Naples port on Western Mediterranean sailings. Allow a full day to see Pompeii properly; Herculaneum is smaller and often combined with it.

8. Old City of Jerusalem, Israel

UNESCO listed since 1981. Currently restricted on most cruise itineraries due to regional travel guidance. Check the current FCDO Foreign Travel Advice and your cruise line’s port advisory before relying on this stop being in the itinerary.

9. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

UNESCO listed since 1978. Small-ship and expedition cruise only — large cruise ships are not permitted. Operators include Silversea, Hurtigruten (HX), Lindblad and Celebrity (Flora, Xploration, Xpedition). Always combined with a Quito pre-stay.

10. Old Town of Tallinn, Estonia

One of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, with intact city walls, the Town Hall Square and St Olaf’s Church. UNESCO listed since 1997. Standard Baltic cruise port — many itineraries that previously included Saint Petersburg now spend a full day or an overnight in Tallinn instead. The old town is a 15-minute walk from the cruise port; no shore excursion needed. Cruise lines calling here include Princess, Holland America, Viking Ocean, Silversea, Regent and MSC.

“If you’re picking just one UNESCO site to see by cruise, make it the Norwegian Fjords. Geirangerfjord from the deck of a P&O or Cunard ship is the experience no other holiday can match. The whole fjord IS the site, and the cruise is the way it was designed to be seen.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most UNESCO sites you can see on one cruise?

A 14-night Eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic sailing typically calls at 4 or 5 UNESCO sites (Dubrovnik, Venice/lagoon, Acropolis of Athens, plus one or two more like Diocletian’s Palace in Split or Corfu Old Town). Around-the-world sailings can call at 20 or more UNESCO sites across a single voyage.

Which cruise line is best for UNESCO-site sightseeing?

Viking Ocean Cruises, Oceania, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas and Holland America all emphasise cultural and historical port content. Expedition lines (HX Expeditions, Lindblad, Silversea Expedition) cover sites that big ships can’t reach (Galapagos, Antarctica’s UNESCO-listed Russian Volcanoes, parts of the Arctic).

Are UNESCO shore excursions usually included?

On luxury lines (Silversea, Regent Seven Seas) shore excursions are typically included. On premium lines (Oceania, Viking, Holland America) they’re charged separately. On mainstream lines (Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean) ship-operated excursions are charged; you can also book independently or use your own taxi for some sites.

How long do I need at each UNESCO site?

Old-city sites (Dubrovnik, Venice, Athens, Jerusalem) need 4 to 6 hours minimum. Ancient sites (Pompeii, Petra, Ephesus) need a full 8-hour day including travel. Natural-feature sites (Norwegian Fjords, Halong Bay) are taken in passively from the ship across a full day’s sailing.

Which UNESCO sites are best for first-timers?

For UK first-time cruisers, the Norwegian Fjords from Southampton (no-fly, scenic-cruising format) and the Western Mediterranean sailing covering Pompeii and Florence are the easiest entry points. Both deliver multiple UNESCO sites in a single 7-night cruise.
