Norwegian Cruise Line - Free at Sea
Cruise Lines, Onboard Experience
Thursday, February 12, 2026

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Free at Sea isn’t free. It’s a paid upgrade that bundles drinks, speciality dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion credits into a single price based on the length of your cruise. Whether it’s worth buying depends on how much you’ll actually use those benefits, how many eligible guests are sharing your stateroom, and whether the additional benefits of Free at Sea Plus justify the extra cost.

For eligible new bookings made from 26 August 2026, Free at Sea has become particularly interesting for families and groups, with the package now available to all guests aged 13 and over in the stateroom, including Speciality Dining.

This guide walks through the maths. If you want to see exactly what’s currently included and the upgrade pricing, our NCL Free at Sea page lays out every benefit. For sailings themselves, the Norwegian Cruise Line page lists every voyage we hold.

Call our specialists on 020 7947 0270 once you have a shortlist.

Norwegian Cruise Line - Free at Sea Bars

30-second view: which Free at Sea tier suits which guest?

You typically…Tier worth shortlisting
Drink wine with dinner and 1-2 cocktails or beers per dayFree at Sea (standard)
Prefer top-shelf spirits, premium wines or ChampagneFree at Sea Plus
Sail solo and rarely drink alcoholCompare the upgrade carefully
Travel with teenagers or additional guests aged 13+Free at Sea is now considerably more attractive
Sail 7+ nights and want unlimited Wi-Fi for workFree at Sea Plus (Plus removes the 150-minute cap)
Cruise to Great Stirrup Cay (NCL’s private island)Standard Free at Sea includes the open bar; Plus adds premium drinks
Book an eligible Suite or The HavenFree at Sea is included without the standard upgrade charge
Take a longer cruise and expect to use most benefitsFree at Sea is usually easier to justify

The upgrade scales with cruise length, but price alone doesn’t tell the whole story. On shorter cruises, light drinkers may struggle to extract the full value from Free at Sea, while the package can look very different for a family or group now that eligible additional guests aged 13 and over can benefit from Speciality Dining. The best comparison is what your party would genuinely have bought without the package.

Norwegian Cruise Line - Free At Sea Family

What’s in each Free at Sea tier

Free at Sea (standard upgrade) bundles five things into one per-night rate:

The Premium Beverage Package covers more than 100 cocktails alongside premium spirits including Grey Goose, Casamigos and Woodford Reserve, wines by the glass, bottled and draught beer, soft drinks and juices. The package can also be used at Great Stirrup Cay, where applicable, although exclusions apply and it is not valid at Harvest Caye.

Speciality Dining scales with cruise length: one meal on 2-4 night sailings, two on 5-6 nights, three on 7-8 nights and four on cruises of nine nights or longer. For eligible new bookings made from 26 August 2026, the benefit is now available to all guests aged 13 and over in the stateroom, rather than being limited to Guests 1 and 2. Restaurants vary by ship but can include Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro, La Cucina, Nama and Food Republic.

150 minutes of Starlink Wi-Fi per guest, suitable for messaging, email and general browsing. The standard package does not support streaming.

A $50 shore-excursion credit per port for Guest 1 in each stateroom, useable across multiple tours per port.

3rd and 4th guests pay taxes only on select sailings, meaningful for families travelling four to a cabin.

Free At Sea Plus

Free at Sea Plus builds on standard Free at Sea with four main upgrades:

Enhanced premium beverages, including a wider selection of top-shelf spirits, premium wines and Champagne by the glass, Starbucks drinks, selected bottled water, energy drinks and fresh juices. The enhanced premium beverage selection is also available at Great Stirrup Cay, where applicable.

Unlimited streaming Wi-Fi, removing the standard 150-minute allowance.

50% off additional speciality dining cover charges beyond your included meals.

Prepaid daily service charges, helping you account for another onboard cost before departure.

What it costs

Free at Sea pricing is fixed according to cruise length. For eligible adult guests, the current UK upgrade is:

Cruise lengthFree at Sea (per person)
2 days£99
3–4 days£129
5–6 days£199
7–8 days£249
9–10 days£309
11–12 days£359
13–14 days£409
15–16 days£459
17–18 days£519
19–20 days£569
21+ days£619

For eligible new bookings from 26 August 2026, additional adult guests sharing the stateroom are charged the applicable Free at Sea upgrade based on the same cruise-length structure. Different age-based rules and charges can apply to younger guests, so it’s worth checking the exact cost for everyone sharing your cabin before comparing the overall value.

Free at Sea Plus is priced as an add-on on top of these rates and varies by sailing. Our specialists can quote the Plus differential for your specific cruise.

When the upgrade is worth buying

The break-even is simpler than the brochure makes it look, but it’s no longer just a question of how many cocktails you’ll drink.

For a couple, Free at Sea usually becomes easier to justify if you’d buy several drinks each day, dine in speciality restaurants, use NCL shore excursions or need Wi-Fi while you’re away. For a family or group sharing a stateroom, the calculation has changed significantly for eligible new bookings from 26 August 2026. With Free at Sea now extending to guests aged 13 and over and including Speciality Dining, a cabin containing three or four eligible guests can receive considerably more usable value than under the previous structure.

On a seven-day or longer sailing, NCL values the Free at Sea beverage, dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion benefits at £1,500 or more based on a Balcony stateroom, although the real value to you depends entirely on how much of it you would otherwise have paid for.

Free at Sea Plus becomes easier to justify on longer sailings if you’ll regularly order premium wines or Champagne, buy Starbucks drinks, need streaming Wi-Fi or value having daily service charges prepaid. A call at Great Stirrup Cay can still add value to Plus if you want the enhanced premium beverage selection, but standard Free at Sea now includes the island’s regular open bar, so Great Stirrup Cay alone is no longer a reason to upgrade.

Skip the upgrade entirely if you’re a low-volume drinker on a short cruise (2–4 nights), if you don’t use Wi-Fi at sea, and if you wouldn’t pay $50 for any of the shore excursions on your itinerary. Our specialists always recommend choosing Free at Sea based on actual usage rather than adding the upgrade by default.

A note on “Free at Sea for free”

You’ll still see some cruise agents describing Free at Sea as a “free” bonus. It isn’t. Norwegian Cruise Line prices Free at Sea as a paid upgrade, with the cost determined by cruise length. Headline valuations are based on the standalone value of the benefits included, rather than the price you actually pay for the Free at Sea upgrade.

The honest framing: Free at Sea is a discounted bundle of paid services. If you’d buy those services anyway, the upgrade is excellent value. If you wouldn’t, it isn’t free.

Every Paramount Package we sell on Norwegian Cruise Line includes Free at Sea as standard, with no inflated value claims attached. The upgrade is in the price.

“The conversation I have most often with NCL guests is whether Plus pays back. On a seven-night Caribbean sailing, Plus can make a lot of sense, particularly if someone in the party drinks premium wine or wants unlimited streaming Wi-Fi. On a short three-night Bahamas hop, almost never. The biggest mistake I see is couples adding Plus ‘in case’ and then leaving most of the premium spirits and dining cover charges unused. If you’re not a Champagne or premium-cocktail drinker, standard Free at Sea is the sweet spot.”

How Free at Sea compares to other lines’ bundled fares

Cunard, P&O and Princess offer comparable bundled upgrades; Royal Caribbean takes a different approach with separate à la carte packages. Each is summarised below.

Cunard’s Signature Package bundles a Beverage Collection, Wi-Fi and a dining credit, priced as a higher-tier fare option rather than a separate per-night charge.

P&O Cruises’ drinks packages are configured with similar tiers, available as an add-on to the fare.

Princess Plus and Premier offer a competing structure built around dining, Wi-Fi and drinks at three escalating levels.

Royal Caribbean’s drinks packages (Deluxe Beverage, Refreshment, Soda) sit alongside their dining packages as separate à la carte add-ons rather than a unified bundle, so the maths is done per inclusion rather than as a bundled per-night rate.

NCL’s Free at Sea sits somewhere between these approaches. Rather than purchasing drinks, dining and Wi-Fi individually, the main benefits are grouped into a single upgrade, with Free at Sea Plus adding another level above it. Whether NCL works out better value than a competitor ultimately depends on the specific sailing, cabin grade and benefits you’d genuinely use.

Booking rules worth knowing

Free at Sea must be selected at least 24 hours before sailing and cannot be changed once you’re onboard. If you make a new booking within 24 hours of departure, the promotion can be selected when you book.

All guests sharing the stateroom must be booked under the same applicable Free at Sea promotion. For eligible bookings made from 26 August 2026, Free at Sea is available to guests aged 13 and over in the stateroom, with age restrictions continuing to determine whether an eligible guest receives the alcoholic Premium Beverage Package.

Additional eligible adults no longer receive the old reduced Guest 3-8 Free at Sea rate. Their upgrade is based on the same cruise-length pricing as Guests 1 and 2, while different rules and charges can apply to younger guests.

Eligible Suite and The Haven bookings receive Free at Sea without the standard upgrade charge.

Free at Sea benefits are fixed package inclusions rather than onboard credit. Unused dining meals, Wi-Fi minutes and other benefits generally have no cash value and cannot be transferred.

Talking to a specialist before you book

The Free at Sea decision is sensitive to itinerary, cabin choice and travelling party. Our specialists book NCL departures every week and can run the actual maths for your specific sailing, including the Plus differential and whether the dining-credit allocation aligns with the restaurants you’d actually want to visit.

The questions worth bringing to that conversation are how many drinks you’d actually buy each day, how many guests aged 13 and over are sharing your stateroom, how many speciality meals you’d otherwise pay for, whether you’ll use NCL shore excursions and whether 150 minutes of Wi-Fi per guest is enough. If you’re considering Plus, think separately about whether you’ll genuinely use premium beverages, Starbucks, streaming Wi-Fi and the included service charges.

FAQs

Is NCL Free at Sea actually free?

No. Free at Sea is a paid upgrade, with the adult UK price currently ranging from £99 to £619 per person depending on cruise length. It bundles benefits such as drinks, speciality dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion credits at a significantly lower cost than purchasing equivalent benefits separately. Whether that’s good value depends on how much of the package you would genuinely use.

Is Free at Sea Plus worth the extra cost?

It’s more likely to represent good value on longer cruises if you’ll regularly use premium spirits, wines or Champagne, Starbucks drinks or unlimited streaming Wi-Fi. Prepaid daily service charges also form part of the package. On shorter cruises, compare the additional cost carefully against the benefits you’ll actually use.

Can I add Free at Sea after booking?

Yes, subject to the applicable booking conditions. Free at Sea must normally be selected at least 24 hours before departure and cannot be changed onboard. If you’re booking within 24 hours of sailing, it can be selected when the reservation is made. Adding Free at Sea gives you the dining entitlement, but speciality restaurant reservations should still be made separately.

Does Free at Sea include gratuities?

The standard Free at Sea does not include daily service charges. Free at Sea Plus adds prepaid service charges as one of its upgrade inclusions.

Are the shore-excursion credits per guest or per stateroom?

Per stateroom, applied to Guest 1, $50 per port. Credits can be split across multiple tours in the same port.

Do I need Free at Sea if I’m booking The Haven?

No. Eligible The Haven bookings receive the Free at Sea benefits without the standard Free at Sea upgrade charge, so you don’t need to purchase the standard upgrade separately.

Does everyone in the cabin now get NCL Free at Sea?

For eligible new bookings made from 26 August 2026, Free at Sea is available to all guests aged 13 and over in the stateroom, including the Speciality Dining benefit. This is a significant change from the previous structure, where speciality dining was generally limited to Guests 1 and 2. Age restrictions still apply to alcoholic beverages, and different rules and charges can apply to younger guests.
