Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, is a unique city known for its canals, bike culture, strong economy, and friendly residents. This city has also been named the happiest in the world, owing to its country’s shorter workdays, free college tuition, and numerous national holidays.

Copenhagen is not only the world’s happiest city but boasts world-class transportation, stunning cathedrals and museums, and a hippie commune that draws visitors from around the world.

If you are planning a cruise sailing from Denmark, you can explore this magnificent northern capital offering endless discoveries for every kind of traveller. Keep reading to find out why your next cruise should depart from Copenhagen.

When is the best time to cruise from Copenhagen?

The best time for you to visit Copenhagen is between March and May or between June and September. Visitors to Copenhagen enjoy excellent weather in the summer with temperatures resting at a balmy 19°C. If you visit in spring, you’ll be able to experience some of the city’s most popular events exclusive to the season. The best part is that there are fewer crowds and better hotel rates in spring.

The months of May through September bring life to the streets, while October brings the city to a lull, in preparation for the winter.

Which cruise lines sail from Copenhagen?

Cruise ships of all sizes and types sail from Copenhagen’s port. Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, and Holland America are some of the cruise lines that use Copenhagen as a homeport for their ships. Luxury cruise operators like Azamara, Seabourn and Oceania also depart from Copenhagen with several sailings every year.

Where do cruises from Copenhagen go to?

Copenhagen’s cruise ship season encompasses spring, summer, and early fall — the times of the year when Northern Europe is lush and vibrant. The most popular cruises from Copenhagen include a trip around the Baltic capitals and an itinerary to Norway.

Cruises worldwide start and end their journeys at Copenhagen’s three cruise terminals: Langeline, Norde Toldbod, and Ocean Quay. The breathtaking Norwegian fjords are a particular highlight of cruises sailing from Copenhagen to the Nordic countries. Fjord safaris, kayaking, and trekking to viewpoints are only a fraction of the activities you will find available. On the way to Norway, your ship might make a stop at one of the historic Baltic capitals where you’ll find preserved medieval towns, religious sites, and castles.

What should you do whilst you’re in Copenhagen?

There is so much to do in Copenhagen during your stay. You can try out Danish delicacies and explore some of Copenhagen’s best-kept secrets.

Tivoli Gardens, a theme park and pleasure garden in downtown Copenhagen, features rides, games, musicals, and ballet performances. Visitors to Tivoli Gardens may ride the Ferris Wheel for panoramic views of Copenhagen, participate in virtual reality activities, and sample Danish specialities from the park’s many food vendors. Your trip to this unique city wouldn’t be complete without a traditional Danish hot dog with crunchy fried onions, pickles, and creamy remoulade.

History buffs will enjoy walking around Rosenborg Castle, a 400-year-old Renaissance castle built by Christian IV that quickly became the king’s favourite royal residence. Apart from viewing Christian IV’s treasures and the Danish Crown Jewels, guests can see the Knights’ Hall and Princess’ Chamber when visiting the castle.

Located in the borough of Copenhagen’s Christianshavn neighbourhood, Freetown Christiana is a community of around 850 to 1000 residents. Christiania Smedie opened her blacksmith shop here in the 1970s — Freetown’s oldest business. You will find various concert venues, bars, halls, workshops, art galleries, and organic and vegetarian eateries here.

Don’t forget to visit Noma, consistently rated as the best restaurant globally for its Nordic cuisine. A herring sandwich and a dozen Limfjord oysters are a good choice if you’re in a hurry. At Torvehallerne Market, sample Danish cheese, coffee, and pastries — or choose an ice-cold local beer.

Extend Your Stay?

Once you set foot in this beautiful city, you won’t have the heart to leave. Copenhagen is not too big, so you can walk anywhere or rent a bike, which is the most popular way to get around the city.

However, you’ll have a hard time getting a taste of all the cultures, fashion, design, and Nordic cuisine in just a few days.

This is why many travellers opt for a back-to-back cruise. You can combine two 7-night cruises and visit both the Norwegian fjords and the Baltics. The itineraries of Baltic cruises include the majestic Royal Palaces in Stockholm, the ancient lanes of Tallinn, the Suomenlinna fortress at Helsinki, and Peter the Great’s architectural treasures in St. Petersburg.

In addition to the breathtaking Norwegian Fjords, a Norway cruise itinerary would also include the incredible scenery of Geiranger, Stavanger’s Old Town, and Bergen’s charming Bryggen harbour.
