If you have ever dreamt of gliding through storybook towns, exploring Europe’s cultural treasures and indulging in exquisite cuisine, then a Danube river cruise might just be the perfect getaway. We recently sat down with Cesario, one of AmaWaterways’ most passionate and experienced Cruise Managers, for an exclusive onboard interview aboard the stunning AmaMagna. His insight and enthusiasm for river cruising was infectious and his highlights of the Danube left us craving our next adventure. Let’s dive into Episode 1 of our new series, All Aboard Ama.

The Best of the Danube, According to Cesario

The Danube is a river rich in history, flowing through some of the most captivating cities and landscapes in Europe. Cesario described it as “one of the most iconic rivers in Europe” and he’s absolutely right! Whether it is Vienna’s imperial elegance, Budapest’s dramatic skyline or the charm of smaller towns like Dürnstein and Melk, the Danube offers a journey through time and culture.

Cesario revealed that Vienna is his personal favourite stop along this impressive itinerary. For him it’s a true highlight, a city that blends grandeur with a calm, unhurried pace. He described how the city changes from day to night and has a Viennese flare that is hard to describe. With its wide boulevards, opulent palace and world-class coffee houses, Vienna offers a unique mix of cultural richness and peaceful charm. Guests can stroll through the historic centre and take in the beautiful architecture, or opt for a bike ride through the city as we did and take in all the sights with an Ama local guide, all included in the cost of your sailing!

Why River Cruising is the Ultimate Way to Explore

After speaking with Cesario, it’s easy to see why so many people love river cruising, whether it’s a morning stroll through cobbled streets or an afternoon cycling along the riverbanks, river cruising allows you to experience destinations more intimately, at a slower and more meaningful pace.

Cesario highlights how much guests appreciate the ease and comfort of life onboard “you unpack once and everything else comes to you”. From your floating boutique hotel, you can see ever-changing scenery, enjoy local excursions, ran by local guides and return to the comfort of your luxurious stateroom. What makes it even more special, he says, is the connection to the places you visit. You don’t just see Europe, you feel it. Through the food, music, architecture and personal stories shared by expert local guides. Our trip captured this perfectly, from sampling local wines in Austria to sunset moments on the Sun Deck as the ship cruises past dramatic city skylines.

Food Worth Travelling For

Let’s talk about the food, because according to Cesario, it is a highlight not to be missed. Onboard AmaMagna dining is taken seriously. You can expect locally inspired dishes, farm-to-table freshness and a range of venues to suit every mood.

Cesario shared with us that the food onboard is so much more than just a meal, it’s part of the cultural journey. Each dish is crafted to reflect the destinations visited, from goulash in Hungary to schnitzel in Austria. “We bring the flavours of the region onboard” he says, “so even if you don’t step ashore, you still taste the culture.” He also describes how many guests are surprised by the variety and quality of the dining experiences. With multiple venues to choose from, including the elegant main restauarant, casual al fresco spots and the fine-dining experience at The Chef’s Table, no two meals feel the same. Cesario’s enthusiasm is clear as he talks about how proud the culinary team are to showcase both international and regional flavours in creative, beautifully presented ways.

What truly stands out is the sense of connection that food creates. As Cesario says “It’s not just about what’s on the plate, it’s about sharing the experience.” From enjoying local wines paired with dinner to conversations around the table with new friends, every meal becomes a memorable part of the journey.

Life Onboard AmaMagna

The AmaMagna is unlike any other river ship. Double the width of traditional river vessels, it offers more space, more options and more luxury. Cesario shared how guests are constantly surprised by the size of the suites, the wellness facilities and the choice of four unique dining venues, a rare find on the rivers. Whether you want to take a yoga class on the Sun Deck, enjoy a massage in the spa or simply sit with a glass of wine as the landscape drifts by, life onboard is all about choice and relaxation.

Cesario also shared his own personal favourite areas of the ship, and it all depends on where in the world they are. “The top deck is probably one of the best places to be when navigating” he says, “or the Alfresco forward, especially when you are sailing in nice scenic places with nice weather.” These spaces offer panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere, making them ideal for watching the world go by. It’s clear that every detail of AmaMagna has been designed with the guest experience in mind, from elegant open spaces to quiet corners perfect for reflecting back on the day. On this ship, the journey really is just as special as the destinations.

The Heart of the Experience

What truly came through in our conversation with Cesario is the heart behind every AmaWaterways cruise. The crew are not just staff, they are storytellers, guides and friends. Many of them, like Cesario himself, have been with Ama for years and bring an incredible amount of knowledge and passion to the experience. It is this combination of service, scenery, food and culture that makes river cruising with AmaWaterways something truly special.

Ready to Experience the Danube?

If Cesario has inspired you as much as he inspired us, there has never been a better time to discover the Danube with AmaWaterways. Whether you are a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveller, you will find something to fall in love with, from the enchanting cities to the world-class service onboard.
