Dining on Havila Voyages - Havila Food Stories

On Havila Voyages, the scenery is not the only thing that changes as you travel between Bergen and Kirkenes. Havila Food Stories follows the Norwegian coast through ingredients, recipes and culinary traditions, with menus evolving as the ship enters different regions. Breakfast, lunch and dinner introduce new flavours every few days, while locally sourced Norwegian produce connects what appears on your plate with the landscapes and communities passing beyond the windows.

A Culinary Journey Along the Norwegian Coast

Havila designed Food Stories around a simple idea: a journey through Norway should also taste like Norway.

Instead of offering one largely unchanged menu throughout the voyage, Havila divides the coastal journey into four food universes. Havrand Restaurant changes its regional menus every few days, allowing breakfast, lunch and dinner to evolve alongside the destinations outside.

The result is a food experience that becomes part of the itinerary itself. As you travel north through western Norway, Trøndelag and into the Arctic, new ingredients, dishes and culinary influences appear onboard.

As Norway changes outside, the menu changes inside

Four Food Universes

The complete Bergen to Kirkenes and back voyage passes through four different culinary worlds. Rather than treating Norwegian cuisine as one single style, Havila uses changing menus to introduce the traditions and ingredients associated with different parts of the coastline.

Current Havrand menus are linked to different stretches and ports along the route. Breakfast and lunch rotate between three menu collections, while dinner develops further through six menus associated with different points between Bergen, Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø, Tromsø, Honningsvåg, Hammerfest, Harstad, Sandnessjøen and Kirkenes. Seasonal ingredients and availability can lead to further changes.

This means that a 12-day round voyage is not simply twelve days of choosing from the same restaurant menu. The food develops with the journey.

The heart of Havila Food Stories

Havrand Restaurant

Havrand is Havila’s main restaurant and the setting for the standard breakfast, lunch and dinner included with packaged coastal voyages. Meals are predominantly served à la carte, giving the experience a calmer, more restaurant-like character than a traditional cruise buffet.

Menus combine traditional Norwegian ideas with more contemporary dishes, using ingredients selected from Norwegian producers wherever possible. Guests can discover several flavours during a meal rather than committing to a single large plate, an approach that forms an important part of Havila’s effort to reduce food waste.

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Let every meal become another way to experience the Norwegian coast. Start the day with a breakfast menu shaped by the journey, discover more regional flavours through smaller dishes at lunch, then settle in for dinner as six changing menus reveal different sides of Norway between Bergen and Kirkenes.

Breakfast

Breakfast at Havrand changes as the voyage progresses, with three current breakfast menus associated with different sections of the coastal route. Rather than relying solely on a large self-service buffet, Havila combines restaurant service with a more considered breakfast offering. This gives guests the opportunity to try different dishes as they travel while reducing the volume of food prepared without knowing whether it will be eaten. On packaged voyages, breakfast is included as part of full board. Juice and milk are available at breakfast alongside complimentary still water, tea and coffee.

Lunch

Lunch follows the same regional philosophy, with menus changing according to the ship’s progress through Norway. Havila encourages guests to choose from multiple smaller dishes, allowing them to try a wider variety of flavours without the excessive portions that often contribute to food waste. The approach has helped Havila reduce onboard food waste to below 75 grams per guest per day. For suite guests, the Havrand lunch menu can also be enjoyed within the more intimate surroundings of Hildring Fine Dining.

Dinner

Dinner provides the greatest variety within Havrand’s current menu cycle, with six different dinner menus associated with different stages of the route. Current menu points include Bergen and Kirkenes, Ålesund and Hammerfest, Trondheim and Harstad, Bodø and Sandnessjøen, Tromsø and Trondheim, and Honningsvåg. The precise dishes can vary according to seasonal ingredients and availability. This continual evolution gives a long coastal voyage a very different culinary rhythm from a cruise where the same restaurant menu repeats each evening.

Norwegian Ingredients, Norwegian Stories

Havila’s chefs select ingredients from Norwegian producers to create both traditional and contemporary dishes. The concept is intended to reflect the cold, clean coastal environment and the food traditions that developed within it.

The connection also extends beyond formal meals. Included onboard activities can feature small tastings of Norwegian specialities such as mussels, mead, rømmegrøt, fish soup, fish cakes, bidos, bacalao and stockfish, depending on the sailing and season.

These moments help turn food into another form of destination discovery rather than simply something served between port calls.

Hildring Fine Dining

Hildring Fine Dining offers a smaller and more refined setting for guests looking to make dining a particular part of the evening.

Special dining experiences can include a five-course dinner and a dedicated king crab evening, with dates published onboard and an additional charge applying where appropriate. Hildring also currently offers separate fish and meat dinner menus.

Suite guests receive additional Hildring benefits. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the restaurant, while the Havrand lunch menu is served within Hildring’s quieter surroundings.

Havly Café

For something less formal, Havly Café on Deck 6 serves a selection of hot and cold dishes from morning until late at night. It continues the Norwegian maritime tradition of straightforward, satisfying food in a casual setting.

Food and speciality drinks purchased from Havly are normally additional to standard full-board dining. Guests can pre-purchase a Havly Café Package on eligible longer voyages, providing unlimited servings from a selected food menu alongside speciality coffee and tea. The package is already included for suite guests.

Havblikk Bar & Lounge

Located within the ship’s panoramic observation area, Havblikk Bar & Lounge provides a relaxed setting for drinks and light refreshments while the coastline passes outside.

Its position on Deck 9 makes the view a central part of the experience, whether that means summer light lingering over the mountains or a dark winter sky above the Arctic coast.

Alcoholic drinks and most additional beverages are not part of Havila’s standard full-board meal package and are charged separately.

What Food and Drink Is Included?

Guests booking Havila’s standard packaged voyages receive breakfast, lunch and dinner, primarily served in Havrand Restaurant. Still water, coffee and tea are included with meals, alongside orange juice, apple juice and milk at breakfast.

Additional snacks, packaged products, speciality drinks and alcoholic beverages cost extra. Havila does not currently offer a traditional beverage package.

Guests travelling on port-to-port tickets do not automatically receive meals, although food can be added when booking or purchased onboard.

Suite Dining Benefits

Suite guests receive an enhanced dining experience during longer Havila voyages. Current benefits include access to Hildring Fine Dining for breakfast and lunch and the Havly Café Package, which provides additional food choices alongside speciality coffee and tea.

Dinner at Hildring and other special food events may still operate separately depending on the experience selected, so individual voyage and suite benefits should be checked when booking.

Food Experiences Beyond the Restaurants

Food appears throughout the wider Havila experience. Depending on the sailing, included activities may introduce local specialities and explain how particular foods became part of life along the coast.

Guests might taste stockfish and learn why Arctic conditions are so important to its production, sample traditional fish soup or bacalao, or encounter flavours linked to Sámi and Norwegian coastal culture. Activities vary according to season and voyage.

These smaller experiences help connect the restaurant menus to the communities, climate and traditions that shaped them.
