Few races bring a Formula 1 season to a close quite like Abu Dhabi. The sun begins to set over Yas Marina, the circuit lights take over, the temperature drops and Formula 1 cars race into the night before fireworks fill the sky. Add huge after-race concerts, the attractions of Yas Island and everything there is to see in Abu Dhabi itself, and you’ve got far more than just a weekend at the racetrack.
Our Paramount Cruises team has attended the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on numerous occasions, so we’ve picked up plenty of useful advice along the way. Whether you’re attending your first Formula 1 race or finally ticking Yas Marina off your list, here’s what we’d want to know before you go.
When is the 2026 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?
The 2026 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December 2026, with the Formula 1 season finale taking place on Sunday. Practice sessions take place on Friday, with final practice and qualifying on Saturday before the main event on Sunday evening. As well as Formula 1, expect support racing and plenty of entertainment throughout the weekend.
What makes the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix so special?
Yas Marina Circuit has hosted Formula 1 since 2009 and has become synonymous with the end of the season. The 5.281-kilometre circuit sits on Yas Island and is surrounded by some of Abu Dhabi’s biggest entertainment attractions.
Its most distinctive feature, however, is the timing. The Grand Prix begins in daylight before the sun gradually disappears and the circuit’s floodlights take over. By the closing stages, you’re watching a completely different-looking racetrack from the one you saw at the start.
It’s also a circuit with plenty of overtaking potential, particularly around the long straight and heavy braking zones. And then there’s the setting. The marina, palm trees, yachts and illuminated architecture surrounding the circuit create one of the most photogenic backdrops on the Formula 1 calendar.
Paramount Cruises top tip: If you’re taking photos, don’t use up all your enthusiasm before the race starts. The circuit looks completely different as golden hour turns into darkness, so some of the best views come later in the afternoon and into the early evening.
Where should you sit at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?
Different grandstands around Yas Marina provide very different experiences.
Main Grandstand
The Main Grandstand gives you the classic Formula 1 view of the start and finish line, grid and pit-lane activity. It’s a great choice if you love the build-up before the race, watching the teams at work and seeing the winner take the chequered flag.
West Grandstand
The West Grandstand is one of the areas we’d look at if seeing overtaking is high on your priority list. Cars arrive at the end of one of the circuit’s longest straights before braking heavily, creating opportunities for drivers to make a move.
North Grandstand
The North Grandstand sits close to the hairpin section of the circuit and provides a very different perspective. It’s a great choice for photographers looking to capture that epic shot as the cars brake hard into the hairpin. It also has, in our opinion, the best Oasis area of all the grandstands, with plenty happening between the track sessions. North Grandstand is also conveniently positioned for Ferrari World and Etihad Park, home of the Yasalam After-Race Concerts.
South and Marina Grandstands
The South and Marina Grandstands combine the racing with some of the views people most associate with Yas Marina. Expect the circuit, marina and surrounding architecture to form part of the backdrop, particularly as the sun begins to set. These grandstands also provide excellent views of the spectacular post-race fireworks, with the illuminated W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island helping to create that unmistakable Yas Marina backdrop.
Whichever grandstand you choose, we’d consider going higher if you can. You’ll generally get a broader view across the circuit and may benefit from more protection from the afternoon sun.
Paramount Cruises top tip: We’d generally avoid the North Straight and West Straight Grandstands if you have other options. These are temporary grandstands and some seats can have pillars or structural elements affecting the view, so the experience isn’t as good as in the permanent grandstands around Yas Marina. We’d also recommend choosing a grandstand seat over General Admission. Yas Marina is a large circuit and the better viewing areas can fill quickly, so having a reserved seat gives you a much more comfortable and reliable view of the action across the weekend.
What’s the best way to get to Yas Marina Circuit?
Yas Marina Circuit is on Yas Island, around 30 minutes by road from central Abu Dhabi in normal traffic. Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem are widely available in Abu Dhabi and are usually one of the simplest ways to reach Yas Island if you’re staying in the city.
When booking your journey, check the gate shown on your ticket and use that as your destination wherever possible. Yas Marina is a large venue, and being dropped on the wrong side of the circuit can leave you with a much longer walk than expected.
Free event shuttle services also operate around Yas Island during Grand Prix weekend, linking key locations with different areas of the circuit.
Whatever option you choose, arrive earlier than you think you need to. There is plenty happening around Yas Marina before the track action begins, and it’s much more enjoyable exploring the Fanzone than watching qualifying start from the back of a taxi.
Paramount Cruises top tip: Don’t try to get a taxi or Uber to drop you directly outside your grandstand. During Grand Prix weekend, road closures and access restrictions mean that’s unlikely to be possible, and you can waste a lot of time sitting in traffic trying to get closer. If you’re sitting in the South or Marina Grandstands, we’d recommend asking to be dropped off around the Yas Plaza Hotels and walking towards the circuit from there. For the North Grandstand, aim for the Ferrari World/Yas Mall area, which puts you on the right side of Yas Island for North Oasis and the circuit. Alternatively, keep things really simple and head to Yas Mall, then use the free Grand Prix shuttle services to get around Yas Island and to the appropriate area of the circuit.
Getting around Yas Marina Circuit
Yas Marina is considerably larger than it can appear on television. You’ll find different grandstands, Oasis areas, food and drink outlets, entertainment, merchandise and the F1 Fanzone spread across the venue.
Fortunately, free circular shuttle services operate around Yas Island during the Grand Prix and are useful when you want to move between different parts of the circuit. They can become extremely busy once the racing finishes, though. If you’re heading towards the concert and the distance is manageable, walking can sometimes be preferable to waiting in a large shuttle queue.
What should you wear to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?
December is one of the best times of year to visit Abu Dhabi, but don’t forget that you’re still spending much of the day in the Middle Eastern sun. Daytime temperatures can be warm, so lightweight, breathable clothing works well alongside sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
Once the sun disappears, however, things can feel noticeably cooler. If you’re staying for one of the after-race concerts, a light additional layer can be useful later in the evening.
And then there are the shoes. You’ll be walking between your grandstand, entertainment areas, food outlets, shuttles and potentially the concert venue, so comfort should win over fashion on race day.
Don’t miss the F1 Fanzone and Oasis areas
There is plenty happening at Yas Marina between the Formula 1 sessions. The circuit has several entertainment areas with food and drink, merchandise, racing activities and live entertainment throughout the weekend. Driver interviews and appearances also take place during Grand Prix weekend, so it’s worth checking the latest programme rather than spending every spare minute sitting in your grandstand. Arrive early enough to explore. Part of the fun of a Grand Prix weekend is everything happening around the racing, not just the sessions themselves.
Stay for the Yasalam After-Race Concerts
The Yasalam After-Race Concerts have become almost as much a part of Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend as the racing itself. Every year, Etihad Park welcomes major international artists after the on-track action finishes. The line-up changes annually and is usually announced gradually in the build-up to race weekend, so check the latest programme before travelling.
Depending on your ticket, access to the concerts is generally included with Grand Prix admission, although premium viewing areas and other upgrades may be available separately. Even if the headline artist isn’t someone you’d normally buy a concert ticket to see, we’d still consider staying. There’s something quite brilliant about watching Formula 1 under the lights and then walking straight into a major live concert.
It also has another advantage. By the time the show finishes, some of the initial rush of people leaving Yas Island has already disappeared.
Paramount Cruises top tip: Unless you’re a huge fan of the artist and determined to get as close to the front as possible, there’s no need to rush straight to the concert when the racing finishes. Etihad Park is huge and there’s normally plenty of room for everyone, so take your time, enjoy the post-race atmosphere and grab something to eat before heading over. You’ll still get to enjoy the show, without joining the initial rush of thousands of fans all heading in the same direction.
Things to do in Abu Dhabi away from the Grand Prix
As impressive as Yas Island is, it would be a shame to visit Abu Dhabi and never see the rest of the city. There is far more here than Formula 1 and theme parks.
Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of Abu Dhabi’s most impressive landmarks and somewhere we’d recommend to almost every first-time visitor. Its white marble architecture, enormous domes and intricate interiors are spectacular at any time of day, although the changing light around sunset makes an evening visit particularly memorable. Remember that this is an active place of worship, so dress respectfully and check the latest visitor guidance before you go.
Explore Louvre Abu Dhabi
Set on Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is worth visiting for the building alone. Its vast dome creates constantly changing patterns of light over the museum, while the galleries take a global approach to art and human history. It’s a very different experience from the noise and energy of Yas Marina and makes a great addition to a longer stay.
Visit Qasr Al Watan
Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace, gives visitors an opportunity to explore impressive halls, architecture and exhibitions covering the UAE’s culture and government. It’s also close to the western end of the Corniche, so it can easily be combined with more sightseeing around that part of Abu Dhabi.
Head into the desert
For something completely different, leave the city behind. Desert experiences outside Abu Dhabi typically combine dune driving with activities such as camel riding, sandboarding and dinner beneath the stars. Watching the sun disappear behind the dunes is one of those UAE experiences that feels a world away from Yas Marina Circuit, despite being part of the same trip.

What should you eat in Abu Dhabi?
One of our favourite things about Abu Dhabi is just how varied the food scene is. You can dress up for dinner at one of the city’s incredible restaurants one evening, then spend hardly anything on a brilliant shawarma the next. You’ll find Emirati and wider Middle Eastern cuisine alongside Lebanese, Indian, Pakistani, Asian and international restaurants, reflecting the huge mix of cultures that call Abu Dhabi home.
Rather than give you another generic list of restaurants, we’ve put together a map of some of our Paramount Cruises team’s favourite places to eat and drink in Abu Dhabi.
Grab a shawarma at Bait El Khetyar
For something quick, inexpensive and seriously tasty, Bait El Khetyar is one of our Abu Dhabi favourites and there is no chance we’re gatekeeping it. This isn’t somewhere you need to dress up or book weeks in advance. Come for a freshly made chicken or meat shawarma, grab a table and enjoy one of the best-value meals you’ll probably have during your stay. Sometimes after a long day exploring Abu Dhabi or walking around Yas Marina Circuit, that’s exactly what you want.
Try a beer brewed in Abu Dhabi
Here’s one you might not expect in the UAE. CRAFT by Side Hustle made history as the UAE’s first licensed microbrewery, brewing its own craft beers right here in Abu Dhabi.
You’ll find it at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, where the locally brewed beers are joined by a menu inspired by Southern-style smokehouse cooking and comfort food. If you enjoy discovering local breweries when you travel, it’s a pretty unique box to tick. There aren’t many people who come home from an Abu Dhabi holiday saying they’ve had a beer brewed just a few metres from where they were sitting. And after a weekend of Formula 1, we can think of worse places to raise a glass to the end of the season.
Try some local and regional flavours
Make time for at least one proper Middle Eastern meal during your stay too. Look out for machboos, a fragrant rice dish traditionally served with meat or fish, alongside grilled meats, mezze, hummus and freshly baked breads. Abu Dhabi has fantastic Lebanese and wider Middle Eastern restaurants at almost every price point, so we’d resist eating every meal inside an international hotel. Some of the best travel memories start with ordering something you’ve never tried before.
Make your Abu Dhabi Grand Prix trip about more than the race
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is one of Formula 1’s great destination events. You get the drama of the season finale, the spectacular day-to-night setting at Yas Marina, huge concerts and a city where winter still means sunshine.
But the trip becomes much more memorable when you give yourself time to experience Abu Dhabi beyond the circuit too. Explore the Grand Mosque, spend a day on Yas Island, discover the city’s restaurants, head into the desert or simply slow things down beside the Corniche.
