The Haven by NCL: Is the Ship-Within-a-Ship Suite Worth It?

The Haven by Norwegian

The Haven by Norwegian Cruise Line is a private ship-within-a-ship luxury area found on most NCL ships. It gives guests dedicated suites, a private restaurant, a butler service, a sundeck with a pool and hot tubs, and exclusive lounge access, while still allowing them to enjoy the wider ship. This guide covers what The Haven includes, which suite category to pick, and whether the upgrade is worth the extra cost.

Last updated: 26 May 2026.

30-second view: who The Haven suits

If you like a big-ship experience with the entertainment, dining variety and itineraries NCL is known for, but you want a quiet, private retreat to come back to, The Haven is built for you. It also suits multi-generational groups travelling together, since the 3-Bedroom Garden Villas sleep up to eight. If you prefer an all-inclusive luxury ship throughout (Silversea, Regent, Explora Journeys) The Haven may feel like a partial solution.

Haven Suite Categories Explained

The Haven includes a range of suite categories so you can match the room to your budget and travel style.

  • Spa Suites: Quiet rooms close to the Mandara Spa with complimentary Thermal Suite access, suited to travellers prioritising wellness.
  • Courtyard Penthouse with Balcony: Around 440 sq ft, sleeping up to three, ideal for couples or small families.
  • Owner’s Suite with Large Balcony: Around 824 sq ft with a separate living and dining area, sleeping up to four.
  • 2-Bedroom Family Villa with Balcony: Around 504 sq ft, sleeping up to six, designed for families travelling together.
  • Deluxe Owner’s Suite with Large Balcony: Up to around 1,307 sq ft with floor-to-ceiling windows, sleeping up to six.
  • 3-Bedroom Garden Villa: Up to around 6,694 sq ft, sleeping up to eight, with an outdoor terrace, hot tub and private dining area. The legacy layout, found on Jewel-class ships.

Private Venues Only Haven Guests Can Use

The Haven Restaurant is a dedicated dining room reserved for Haven guests. It serves a menu of grills and seafood-led dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Haven guests also have access to a private observation lounge and bar, a courtyard with a pool and hot tubs (covered on most ships), and a private sundeck with attendants serving food and drinks throughout the day.

Butler, Concierge and Personalised Service

Every Haven suite comes with a butler and 24-hour concierge. The butler handles in-suite dining requests, unpacking, daily snacks, dinner reservations across the ship’s restaurants, and any personalisation requests. The concierge looks after disembarkation logistics, theatre seating, shore excursions and priority embarkation at the pier. Haven guests are escorted on and off the ship at embarkation and ports of call.

What’s Included in Your Haven Fare

The Haven includes Free at Sea as standard, so the highest tier of inclusions is built into the fare. Typical inclusions: premium beverages, speciality dining, premium Wi-Fi and shore-excursion credits, depending on the booking promotion. The Haven has been voted Best Accommodations by Porthole Magazine. Always confirm the current Free at Sea inclusions for your sail date before booking.

Thoughtful Touches in the Room

Haven suites feature pillow-top mattresses, 100% cotton bed linens, evening turndown service, plush bathrobes, premium toiletries, a Lavazza espresso machine and a fully stocked bar set up to your preferences. Bathrooms include double sinks and large rainfall showers, with whirlpool tubs in higher categories.

Where You’ll Find The Haven

The Haven is available across most of NCL’s fleet, including Prima-class (Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Aqua, Norwegian Luna and the new Norwegian Aura launching in 2027), Breakaway Plus-class (Encore, Joy, Bliss, Escape), and Jewel-class with the legacy Garden Villas. It is not available on the older Sun-class ships.

Is The Haven Worth It?

The Haven upgrade typically adds around 50% to 100% to a balcony fare, depending on the sailing and the suite category. Travellers who value a private retreat, butler service and the courtyard pool tend to see it as good value. Travellers who would rather use the wider ship and book a balcony cabin can save a significant amount without losing access to most onboard activities.

“The Haven gives you a big-ship cruise without the big-ship crowd. The courtyard pool and the private restaurant are the two things that change the experience the most, especially on the Prima-class ships.”

Josh Harris, Cruise Specialist, Paramount Cruises

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra is The Haven compared with a balcony cabin?

The Haven typically costs 50% to 100% more than an equivalent balcony cabin on the same sailing, although seasonal promotions and Free at Sea inclusions can narrow the gap.

Do Haven guests get free speciality dining?

Haven guests typically receive a speciality dining package as part of the Free at Sea promotion. Your butler can book reservations across the ship’s speciality restaurants.

Are children allowed in The Haven?

Children and teens are welcome to stay in Haven suites with their family and use The Haven Restaurant. The Haven Courtyard and Sundeck are reserved for guests aged 16 and over, so younger children cannot use the private pool area. The 3-Bedroom Garden Villa and 2-Bedroom Family Villa are popular choices for multi-generational travel.

Can non-Haven guests visit Haven areas?

No. Haven facilities, including the restaurant, lounge, courtyard and sundeck, are restricted to Haven suite guests only.

Which NCL ship has the best Haven?

The Prima-class ships (Prima, Viva, Aqua, Luna and Aura from 2027) offer the most modern Haven layouts with the largest private outdoor sundeck. The Breakaway Plus ships have the iconic covered courtyard pool. Jewel-class ships are the only place to book the legacy 3-Bedroom Garden Villas.
