Cruising the Caribbean |
Your Amazon exploration is perfectly sandwiched between relaxing days spent cruising the warm waters of the Southern Caribbean. The picture-perfect islands of St. Maarten and St. Lucia will be your first port's of call before journeying south to Devil's Island, the former penal colony in French Guiana. Luckily you won't have to follow in the footsteps of Henri Charrière, author of the book Papillon, who managed to escape the prison by filling sacks with coconuts and drifting to the mainland. On your journey north you'll be stopping in Barbados, Aruba and Holland America's very own award-winning private island, Half Moon Cay, where a horseback riding excursion is a must. |

Amazon Explorer |
Not many people can say that they've cruised on the world's largest river, this 1,000-mile journey up the Amazon, with rain forest views extending in every direction, will certainly be a memory you will cherish forever. Nature enthusiasts will be in for a treat, the basin is home to around 10% of all the world's known animal and plant species. Make sure to pack a pair of binoculars, from jaguars to macaws and pink dolphins to capybaras, these are just some of the creatures you might be able to spot along your journey. More than 900 miles from the Atlantic Ocean lies the city of Manaus, sitting at the confluence of Brazil's Amazon River and Rio Negro, where the great opera house and theatre are a reminder of the boom years of rubber production in the late 19th century. Manaus provides an ideal starting point for excursions into the watery jungle. A short boat ride upstream will give you a closer look at the meeting of the waters, where the Rio Negro and Solimoes run side by side for many miles, perfectly delineated by their respective colours, a sight which needs to be seen to be believed. |
